Funding Program for Large Energy Storage Systems in Austria

Förderung Großspeicheranlagen

The Climate and Energy Fund of Austria has launched a new funding program for electricity storage systems to facilitate investments, promote the adoption of storage solutions in the energy supply system, and simultaneously encourage the use of renewable energy sources.

Who can apply?
Natural and legal persons, as well as individuals and partnerships, are eligible to submit a funding application.

Support for new installations and expansions: Funding is available for both newly installed electricity storage systems and expansions of existing systems, provided that they are used for storing electricity from renewable energy sources. Additionally, the use of second-hand storage systems (Second Use) is supported, provided they offer a cost-effective alternative to new installations and meet specific conditions.

Funding rates

  • For medium-sized electricity storage systems (storage capacity from 51 - 250 kWh), the funding is 150 euros per kWh of net capacity, but limited to a maximum of 30% of the investment costs.
  • For large electricity storage systems (251 kWh and above), the funding is a maximum of 20% of the investment costs, with higher requirements.

Deadlines and requirements
The installation must be operational within 36 months of contract signing. Applications must be submitted before any binding orders for system components, deliveries, construction commencement, or other irreversible investment commitments.

Requirements for medium-sized electricity storage systems
xelectrix Power energy storage systems can meet these requirements:

  • Integration into an energy management system and the ability to communicate with other energy system components.
  • Capability for external control (e.g., setting charging or discharging power) via a communication interface.
  • Confirmation of knowledge and adherence to technical and organizational rules for operators and users of grids (TOR).

Requirements for large electricity storage systems
In addition to the requirements for "medium-sized electricity storage systems," storage systems with a capacity of 251 kWh or more must meet the following conditions:

  • Selection of projects by an expert jury.
  • Multi-use operation - demonstrating at least two system utility goals (participation in electricity markets, optimization of own operations, use for reducing grid impact, etc.).
  • Prequalification for the regulation energy market.
  • Real-time data exchange.
  • Scientific accompanying research for the next 3 years.
  • Publication of results from accompanying research.

Important notes

  • Combining this funding program with other federal funding is not possible.
  • The implementing agency for this program is Kommunalkredit Public Consulting GmbH (KPC).
  • Funding applications must be submitted electronically between December 4, 2023, and May 31, 2024, at 12:00 PM, through the website www.umweltfoerderung.at/grossspeicher.
  • All received applications will be assessed by KPC for eligibility, and medium-sized electricity storage applications will receive a flat-rate grant.

Budget
A total of 35 million euros is available for the "Large-scale Storage Systems" funding program. This includes 10 million euros for "medium-sized electricity storage" from 51 kWh to 250 kWh, another 10 million euros for "large electricity storage systems" from 251 kWh and above, and 15 million euros for heat storage systems.

Take advantage of this opportunity to support your medium-sized electricity storage system and contribute to the optimization of our energy system. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
